Rafael Doníz’s photographies are a lesson in visual anatomy: It is sufficient to address to how space integrates with the relationship of tonal values and the forces of contrast and direction of the elements in his field. The geometry of the pits and their drawing is linked to the compositional geometry of the shot and its diagonals. Here, Rafael Doniz also displays his interest in the textures and tones between the saline whiteness and the deep darks of brown skin. Shadows on white.
These images add to Doníz’s long series dedicated to work, its conditions and protagonists. They have been built with the best instruments of visual grammar. The photographic construction is at the center of Rafael Doníz’s sharp gaze. Proceeding on the part, so we add everything together as a configuration of the whole. It is a humanism incorporated into the best of Mexican photography.
This photographic series of the salt makers by Rafael Doniz was made with the Popolocas people of Zapotitlán de las Salinas in Puebla, and with the Zapotecas people of the neighborhood Alvaro Obregón in Juchitán, Oaxaca.
